Dudley Cates is the "Rene-suds" man behind this fiendish plot; he's been at it for many years in several states and has proven conclusively that he's not very smart and not much of a businessman. But he's also proven to be tenacious, resilient, and notably - indeed even annoyingly-- enamored of his own creation. Cates has brewed a few different styles of beer over the years in different places around the United States using the vaunted barley he obtains from farmer Tim Carson, but he thinks this latest version, a malty amber that resulted from a collaboration with Mark Burford of Blue Point Brewing Company, is the best yet. Cates launched the beer in 4-packs this past March in New York City and Long Island, where he resides (Southampton). Sales have been strong, as New Yorkers and Long Islanders have taken advantage of the opportunity to buy a unique grog that was previously available only on tap in select restaurants and bars. Now we can drink Crop Circle at home! There are now plans underway to introduce Crop Circle to markets all across New York State by late September, and the whole tri-state area by the new year. We're sorry if this link has been more about the beer than about Mr. Cates, but only his therapist and an unlucky select few get the real story. But maybe this will help: he's a self -described "former people person and current beer person" who likes to travel, read (especially books that aren't obviously fiction or non-fiction), play tennis, softball and touch football, ski, ride his motorcycle, fish, question, disagree, figure out, listen to Coast to Coast AM, challenge, contend, pursue, play backgammon, billiards, and ping pong, think about the future and listen to all sorts of music but particularly rock, country, folk, classical, and especially the Grateful Dead. He is a Gemini and a 5 in numerology. He's turned off by leopard print patterns on women (or anything else). He's never been even a decent foosball or basketball player, and the only video or computer game he was ever decent at was Defender, and that was when he was a teenager. He drives a white 1993 GMC Safari minivan but also owns a red 1983 Harley-Davidson FXRT and a 1981 Chevrolet Step Van panel truck with the Crop Circle Beer logo on it (it's parked outside Tugboat's North Sea House in North Sea, where you can walk in and buy a Crop Circle to wash down a burger, wings, etc. and shoot a game of pool or play some tunes on the jukebox). He never was able to figure out the Rubiks cube. |
